From Family Fun to School Selection: The Inspiring Journey of the Khan Family at Cricketqube

When we launched our Family Cricket sessions in Blakelaw over 16 months ago, our aim was simple — to make cricket accessible, inclusive, and community-led. Since then, we’ve welcomed families of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities to join us each week for fun, fitness, and connection.
One of our most inspiring stories has come from the Khan family — a family of five who have been attending our sessions regularly since the very beginning. Parents Mohammed Farooq Khan and her wife Saba have been joined weekly by their three children, Mohib, Imaan, and Muaaz, forming a brilliant example of the power of family-based sport.
School Cricket Team Selection
This week, we were overjoyed to learn that Mohib has been selected to represent Jesmond Park Academy’s school cricket team — a huge milestone for him and an incredible endorsement of the impact of our sessions.
"Mohib got selected at school to represent Newcastle… all thanks to Cricketqube, you and Jack for the efforts,"
shared Saba, Mohib’s proud mum, in a message to us.
What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Mohib has never played at a cricket club. His selection came purely from the skills, confidence, and passion he developed at our community sessions in Blakelaw, led by Coach Jack Stephenson. It’s a testament to what inclusive, high-quality, local cricket can do.
"I enjoyed Cricketqube sessions and it's really fun, I love playing here. It helped me to get into my school team,"
Mohib told us when we interviewed him this week.
Cricket and More
And the impact doesn’t stop with cricket.
Saba, Mohib’s mum, recently completed Mental Health First Aid training with Mind and an NSPCC course on working with children with special educational needs, both of which were signposted and funded through Cricketqube. These qualifications helped her secure a job as a school teacher — a huge step forward for her career and confidence.
Now, Mohib is even planning to volunteer at our summer cricket camps, continuing his journey with Cricketqube not only as a player but as a young leader. His siblings, Imaan and Muaaz, are also promising cricketers in their own right, full of energy and potential.
Why This Matters
The Khan family’s story is a perfect example of what our Family Cricket project, funded by the North East Combined Authority under the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is all about. It’s about supporting whole families, building cross-generational bonds, enhancing well-being, and opening up opportunities that go far beyond the cricket pitch.
"Stories like the Khan family’s show why we do what we do. At Cricketqube, we believe cricket should be more than just a game — it should be a tool for social mobility, connection, and confidence. Seeing a young player get into his school team and a parent take steps toward a new career — all through a community cricket session — is exactly the impact we strive for."
— Alosh K Jose, CEO & Co-founder, Cricketqube
We're incredibly proud of Mohib and his family, and we can’t wait to see what more lies ahead for them. Their journey is Cricketqube in action — inclusive, community-led, and transformational.
